10/22/1844 was the date, marked out by scripture, to close the 2300
years (mentioned in Dan 8:14). On this day, many adventists awaited
the return of Christ to the earth. Though the scriptures had lead them
to the right date for the closing of the 2300, once again, like
04-19-1843, the day came and went, and Christ did not return to the earth as
was expected. For this reason, 10/22/1844 has been termed "The Great
Disappointment." Many again left the cause of truth, which pointed to
10/22/1844, but others, despite this bitter disappointment, continued
holding on to their experience and faith, not only in the scriptures,
but in the methods of interpretation, which the scriptures had
revealed, and history confirmed. Once again, those waiting ones where comforted by God, and made to
see the error in their expectation. While they had the right date for
the close of the 2300, they had the wrong event. It had been tradition
to believe that the sanctuary (to which Daniel 8 showed would be
cleansed) was the earth. After the disappointment in 1844, those that went back to enquire
of God in prayer and diligently search their Bibles found that the
sanctuary of Dan 8:14 is the sanctuary in Heaven. They saw that Christ entered into the Most Holy Place of the
heavenly sanctuary, beginning the antitypical
day (time period) of atonement, rather than returning to the earth.
Though they prepared themselves with the wrong event in mind, God had
it so, that they would be prepared to enter in by faith with Christ
into the Most Holy on 10/22/1844. Soon after, the truths concerning the unbroken claims of the
Sabbath were revived, and, between 1860 and 1863, the Seventh-Day
Adventist church was named and organized.

The door of the Holy Place (and its ministration) was shut and the
door of the Most Holy Place (and its ministration) was opened. Those that refused to follow the light as it advanced beyond the
veil, into the Most Holy, were left behind, but mercy still lingered for those who did not have opportunity to
know and reject such light.

All time prophecies came to an end, and it was declared that time,
from this point on, was to be no longer (Rev 10:6): that is, the
predictions of the scriptures for future events were no longer to be
obtained via time calculation. Believers began relying upon Bible
principles
in order to understand the past, present, and even the future, and so
it is today.

The work of the 3rd angel (of Rev 14:9-12) began its work: the
investigative judgment of all began with those who first lived on
earth.
